The road I drive down to get from my house and out of town parallels train tracks, so it isn’t uncommon to see a train or to be stopped at the crossing. Yesterday, on the way into work, I was just driving along, and saw a locomotive and two passenger cars parked on a siding. This caught my eye because: 1) It is VERY rare to see a train parked here and 2) because this train had passenger cars and this particular line is a freight line.
I am not an expert on railroads or trains (but I used to collect Lionel when I was younger) but I did overhear the Engineer talking to another photographer and telling him that this train is used for inspection of the tracks.
For you train buffs out there, this was Norfolk Southern Locomotive #5608 and Research Cars #36 & #37.
